EXTRA! EXTRA! Around noon on Friday, July 4th,
the Heart Of Texas Chorus took their places on the chorus risers at the Sommet Center
in Nashville, Tennessee and when the stage curtain opened the audience of more than
8,000 witnessed a Texas prarie scene where a band of dirty and bone weary cowboys
crooned the plaintive plea of a dieing, fellow trail-hand - "Don't Bury Me Here
- On The Lone Prarie." But, through dynamic vocalization the audience came to realize
that - "under western skies on the lone prarie" is truly where all cowboys are destined
to rest. Following this majestic ballad, HOT rewarded the audience with a dynamic
and fun filled rendition of "Don't Fence Me In" which included, along with a string
of hysterically comic sequences, an appearance by the characters from PONDEROSA!
This marvelous performance was
the culmination of months of dedicated hard work and frequent rehearsal through
which, to the credit of all Texans and the Barbershop Harmony Society, the Heart
Of Texas Chorus improved their standing in worldwide competition to 9th in the world!
The entire chorus is grateful
to our director Ron Black and the Music Leadership team for a wonderful season of
growth in vocal performance and presentation which leaves us all wondering what
the next year will hold?
RECOGNITION BY DISTRICT PRESIDENT
Hi Don and All the Men of the Heart of Texas Chorus,
I was thoroughly entertained by the Cowboy package at Nashville, as I knew I would
be. Moving up from tenth to ninth, and improving by another 20 points over your
Denver performance, was a significant step forward. As you continue to improve,
the journey up the ladder gets harder every year, but I am confident you have the
talent to continue that climb. I realize as I write this that you will soon be embarking
on a director search, as we in the district have all become aware of Ron’s eventual
departure. Though his leaving will leave a major hole in your music program, you
need to feel confident that you can continue to improve. I say this because as I
got to know many of you these past few years, I realized that you are not just a
fine group of singers, but that you are also a chapter filled with men who care
and have the drive to continue to be successful. Men like you accept the challenge
of the moment, and use it as energy to propel you forward. There is no question
in my mind that you can successfully return to the International stage next year
in Anaheim, while continuing to improve. Finally, and speaking for all the members
of the Southwestern District, may I offer to you my sincerest congratulations for
that stirring Nashville performance. We look forward to seeing y’all in Little Rock
in October.
Cheers,
Dan Fullerton
President, Southwestern District
